RusCuisine.com 3.5-check rating  New - 15 January 2005
Over 450 Russian recipes, categorized and subcategorized to make browsing quite easy. The navigation is very good and there is also a search that allows you to either search for an exact match or a "sounds like" match. Most of the recipes are easy to follow and there is only an occasional hard-to-find ingredient. I did note a recipe or two (such as Royal Bob's Spicy Beef recipe -- containing Hooter's Hot Sauce and Emeril's Southwest Essense as two of its ingredients) that don't look quite authentic ... oh well, what do I know. There is a shopping area, but it does not intrude in the recipe area. (Last reviewed: 15 Jan 2005)

A few nice looking recipes categorized by appetizer, soup, etc., but you have to scroll down in each category to find the recipes. There's also an alphabetical index. What caught my interest was the recipe for Sauerkraut Salad with Carrots and Apples. I used to hate Sauerkraut until my friend Agu's mother (who emigrated to the US from Estonia) made me try her version with apples and prunes; now I look with interest whenever I see a recipe with Sauerkraut and fruit. Duck with Red Cabbage also sounds good as well as Beet Relish, Pickled Mushrooms, and Borsch with Meat. (Last reviewed: 23 Dec 2004)

About 3 dozen recipes ranging from starters to desserts. There is nothing fancy about this site, but the recipes are clear and concise. About 1/3 of the recipes are desserts. (Last reviewed: 15 Jan 2005)

Soups, kebabs, pilaus, dolma, kutaby, pickles, pastries, jams, and beverages. There are a few recipes in each category each with a photo of the finished dish. There are some recipe ingredients that may be difficult to find, but that's what the web is used for. I found an unknown ingredient, matsoni, quite easily in one of the popular search engines (by the way, matsoni is a yogurt-like product). Some of the recipe instructions are not very clear, but all the ingredients are listed by weight which helps a bit. So if you are willing to experiment, you may find a gem or two here. The site loads rather slowly for me (timed out a couple of times). (Last reviewed: 15 Jan 2005)

This site has a number of interesting recipes including Kulich (a cake with rum-soaked raisins, saffron, and candied orange peel) and Pelmeni (meat filled dumplings). Some of the English is a bit rough around the edges and some recipes could use a bit more detail in the instructions. Overall the site is worth a look. (Last reviewed: 15 Jan 2005)
Recipes for Tatar foods 2.5-check rating
This small collection (5 recipes) is the only one of its kind I've found. The recipes are primarily filled dough with very little spice, but interesting nonetheless. (Last reviewed: 23 Dec 2004)

An unusual site inasmuch as there are recipes from Georgia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan. There are numerous recipes from each area and additional recipes classified by special occasion. Unfortunately most of the recipes appear to have been submitted by site visitors and the quality of instructions is quite variable as well as the measurement units. Although the site appears to be primarily a shopping site, there are no intrusive pop ups as of this review, but both the left and right 25 percent of the browser window is devoted to selling you something.
