Latin American Recipe Sites
I have grouped Mexican, Central American, and South American recipe sites here. Also, included in this grouping are other cuisines in the Caribbean area.
Mexican
- The Mole Page

- A must see page if you like Mexican food. If you don't have a source for dried chilies and other Mexican ingredients; find one (either nearby or mail order) so you can try some of these recipes. The site lists multiple sources if you're having trouble finding one. I'd have given this site a higher rating (at least 4) except that some of the ingredients may be difficult for some folks to find and also, the recipes tend to be a bit complicated due to the number of ingredients, preparation of the challis, and the amount of time some of the recipes may consume. BUT, if you've been eating in Mexican chain restaurants, your taste buds won't believe how rich and satisfying a carefully prepared mole can be. (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
- Cocina Mexicana

- A site that is tied to the University of Guadalajara. They have many recipes in English or you can view the recipes in Spanish. There are also some special recipes only in Spanish (click on the Web Chef link in the navigation frame which takes you to the "Woman in the kitchen" page). The recipes are organized in several ways depending on whether you pick the "Menu" link (organized by category) or the "Typical Food" link (organized by state, but recipes in Spanish -- you can find the duplicates in the Menu section). - Culinaria.com

- Another dot com site, but they have about 50 recipes that look quite interesting, including Shrimp in Pumpkin Seed Sauce and Grilled Shrimp With Papaya-Rocotillo Salsa. (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
- Mexico Connect

- A dot com magazine, but the recipes look good and they are quite readable. The recipes are organized by category (ingredient) and by course. There are also some other cooking features on this site such as a guide to Mexican herbs and a weights, measures, conversions, translations section. (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
- Conservas La Costeña

- This site now has an English version (look at the bottom of the home page) and now uses Flash. A commercial site (in Spanish) with about 50 recipes that use their products of course. So if your Spanish is OK give it a try, I'm sure most of the prepared products in the recipes are available in your own supermarket under another brand name. (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
- Global Gourmet

- A dot com site with a nice collection of recipes if you don't mind scrolling and digging around the site (and avoiding all the ads). (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
Puerto Rican
- La Cocina de Flora

- If you can bear to scroll down all the way to the bottom of the page, you'll find a nice selection of recipes. There aren't a lot of them, but most of them look good. Also, you have to put up with some music that's difficult to turn off. (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
Other Central and South American
- Maya Paradise

- Recipes primarily from Guatemala. You can view the recipe list in English, Spanish, or both languages; the recipe is displayed in both languages. Also, you can change the sort order of the recipe listings by number, English title, Spanish title, type of dish, type of food, or ethnic category (there is also a search window). The recipes are quite clear and easy to read, but many of them call for miltomates (sour green tomatoes). After some extensive research I found these are similar to the tomatillo, but smaller (more the size of a large marble and purple in color). Take a good look at this site, you may find a gem here. - Panamanian Cuisine

- A very small site with no navigation, just a page full of recipes. Unfortunately it's on geocities so it loads very slowly. If you want to turn off the music, the control is at the very bottom of the page. (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
- Bolivia Web - Recipes Gallery

- A limited number (about 20-25) of recipes grouped by category; recipes in both English and Spanish. There are a few unusual ingredients, but most recipes can be made with locally available ingredients. This is the only Bolivian recipe site I've encountered so far. (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
- A Taste of Brazil

- A VERY limited selection of recipes and since the pages are under construction some of the links do not work; the links to Meat and Poultry and Beverages take you to a directory listing rather than to a page. Worth a look if you have an interest in Brazil. (Last reviewed: 18 May 2005)
- Guyana Outpost

- Recipes from Guyana and the Caribbean. If you look off to the left side you will see the site menu which allows you to list recipes alphabetically or by food category. The initial page is a bit messy and hard to navigate, and the site tends to be slow, but once you get around the irritations, there are some nice recipes and links to explanations of unfamiliar ingredients. To add to your irritation, when you go to one of the ingredient explanation links and attempt to go back with your browser, you usually are not back in the recipe you started with.
