The Recipe Site Review

These recipe sites are essentially product/industry promotions. You'll find sites like the National Pasta Association, Idaho Potato Official Website, Mangos Online, The Mushroom Council, Pear Bureau Northwest, and the Dairy Council of Wisconsin.

I decided to remove these sites from the USA page and put them on their own page. Although many/most of these sites are US sites, since they are essentially product promotions I thought they should be separated. You'll find everything from pasta to Wisconsin cheese.

Honey.com (National Honey Board) 4.0-check rating  New - 15 January, 2006
There may be more information than you can digest on this site. There is information on honey floral varietals, honey history, honey in athletics, and hundreds of recipes. Check out the link to the "Honey Locator" on the floral varietals page. (Last reviewed: 15 Jan 2006)
National Pasta Association (ilovepasta.org) 4.0-check rating
Well I guess I've decided to put all the industry promotion sites in this section for some reason. This site provides nutritional information, pictures of some recipes, a search page, and seven categories of recipes (30-minute, beef & lamb, meatless, pork, poultry, seafood, super low-fat). There's a wide variety of recipes here and even a dessert lasagna (unfortunately they show the picture and list of ingredients, but don't provide the instructions). (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
Idaho Potato Commission Web Site 3.5-check rating
Yes, I can spell potato; I'm not remotely related to Dan Quayle. An industry promotion site but they manage to keep the promotion to a bare minimum in the recipe section. Search through over 100 recipes by recipe type or keyword. They have recipes for appetizers, breads, desserts, main dishes, etc. Hey! They even have a recipe for Potato Chocolate Cake. Pear Bureau Northwest (USA Pears) 3.5-check rating
It was pointed out to me by the VP of Communications at the Pear Bureau that I had neglected to mention their site in this area. The oversight was unintentional; I'm a pear lover. It's one of the few fruits that hasn't been ruined (so far) by trying to breed something that is uniform, great looking (but tasteless). Like many fruits, pears work well in main dishes as well as desserts. The Pear Bureau site has recipes organized by category and pear type as well as providing the complete list. There are some unusual combinations such as Pear-Bean Salad and Pear Corned Beef Slaw. I'm a sucker for ginger so two recipes immediately caught my eye: Ginger Cakes with Pear Sauce and Gingered Pear Jam. There are some interesting recipes on this site so if you're looking for new ways to use pears, check it out. (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
The Mushroom Council 3.5-check rating
The link has changed, but I think this is still the same site. A mushroom promotion site that has several hundred recipes. There is a search page that allows you to constrain your choices by mushroom variety, course, and ingredient/cooking style. Some sample entries include: Smoky Spinach and Gruyere-Stuffed Mushrooms, Mushroom Bread, Mushroom Onion Casserole. There are definitely some ideas that I've never encountered before. California Strawberry Commission 3.0-check rating
I never dreamed there were so many things you could do with strawberries. I guess I just got into a rut ... eating them plain, maybe in a salad, or perhaps shortcake; I know I eat fewer of them than I used to -- they just don't seem to have much taste anymore unless you're lucky enough to catch the homegrown ones early in the summer here in the Midwest. There are plenty of ideas on this site if you can't think of what to do with a bumper crop. Grilled Strawberry Kiwi Kabobs, Strawberry 3-Egg Omelette, Grilled Salmon with Strawberry Salsa are among the recipes that cover appetizers, beverages, breads, cakes & pies, entrees, salads, and soups. Washington Apples 3.0-check rating
The industry promotion site so I won't rate it as high as I might otherwise. There are quite a few recipes (looks like several hundred) ranging from deserts to main courses. Find recipes by category or search. There is also a link to a translation site so you can have their pages translated into Spanish, French, German, Italian, or Portuguese (only one page at a time). With a site like this, you'll never have to wonder what to do with your apples. I again wonder if there's a zucchini site like this; I promise to keep looking. (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (Cheese and Dairy Recipes) 3.0-check rating
Since I currently live in Wisconsin (transplanted Minnesotan), it's my obligation to put in a plug for the dairy industry promotion site. Loads of desserts and, of course, a plethora of CHEESE recipes. I need to be careful about the cheesehead stuff though because I've been told you can't be a true cheesehead unless you were born here. Turbana Corporation (Banana Recipes) 2.5-check rating
A few desserts and a few main courses ... I'll swear there used to be more recipes out here. Anyway they have a few interesting ones using both regular bananas and plantains. (Last reviewed: 26 Dec 2004)
