The Recipe Site Review

A few Indian recipe sites and also Pakistani and Sri Lankan, I just haven't had time to get them all in. Expect to find this page updated soon. I will probably do some reorganization, too. I noticed that I have some sites on the Oriental page (notably the Sri Lankan sites) that should probably be on this page.

Indian Recipe Sites

I have included nearby countries such as Pakistan and Sri Lanka on this page. They are included because of geographic similarity. Expect to find this page updated soon. I will probably do some reorganization, too. I noticed that I have some sites on the Oriental page (notably the Sri Lankan sites) that should probably be on this page.

sanjeevkapoor.com (Indian Food Guide) 3.5-check rating
The last time I tried this site it was verrrrry slow. An extremely large number of recipes by a well known (according to the site) chef in India, Sanjeev Kapoor. If you can't find a recipe here, you're not looking for Indian food. There are 130 vegetarian recipes, 150 snack and savouries, and dozens more main courses, breads, salads, raitas, etc. There are photos of many of the recipes and a reference section with information on spices. When I was on the site, a number of links that take you to other parts of the site did not work, but I didn't have any problems navigating in the recipe area. Also, you might find a few of the recipes could use more detailed instructions. (Last reviewed: 23 Dec 2004)
The Desi Cookbook (Pakistani) 3.5-check rating
This is a really nice looking site with, I'd guess, about 100 recipes. The recipes come from the site author's mom so they're home cookin'. A feature on the site that some might find helpful is a white link for each spice used in a recipe which opens a picture of the spice (and provides a translation -- for example zeera is cumin seed). You may have trouble following some of the instructions; for example, it's not clear how much water to add when a recipe calls for 2-3 glasses of water). This site is definitely work a look. Dropped my rating by 1/2 check -- they're making me register to see the recipes -- a bit of a pain. Lots of recipes organized by food category. A feature on this site is that the recipes have links to the ingredients so if you are not sure of an ingredient, you can get an explanation (usually with a picture, too). They also have a set of menus with suggestions for meal combinations. Many of the recipes have pictures of the finished dish. (Last reviewed: 23 Dec 2004)
Goan Cuisine (goacom.com) 3.0-check rating
You learn something every day. Goa is a state on the west coast of India that was ruled by Portugal for over 450 years. The recipes on this site reflect the Portuguese influence as well as the Indian influence on the cuisine. Empadinhas (or empanadas) with turmeric and tamarind in the filling which definitely sounds like a cross-cultural dish, caramel custard (suspiciously like flan), and green mango chutney are just a few of the offerings on this site. Kosher Indian Recipes (Kashrus.org) 3.0-check rating  Not found - December 5, 2004
American-Asian Kashrus Services is a firm specializing in providing Kosher supervision of manufacturing facilities throughout Asia and America. On this page of their site they have about two dozen recipes, roughly 1/3 of them desserts. There isn't a wide range of Indian dishes here so don't expect to find the variety you'll find on other sites, but if you want Kosher recipes it's worth a look. One recipe I think I'll give a try is Qabargah or Kamargah (lamb chops in spicy batter). (Last reviewed: 23 Dec 2004)

This is an unusual site inasmuch as it provides the recipes in both English and Hindi. The recipes look good, but I found the site, on the whole, a bit difficult to work with. I have my display set to 800 x 600 and found that about 25% of the right hand side of the page was not visible. Since the links to the recipes are on the right side, I had to scroll over almost every time. There are a few interesting recipes that I have not seen on other sites -- Nargisi Kofta (vegetable dumplings simmered in curry), Sooji ka Halwa (simple nutty sweet made of sugar and semolina), and Boondi Raita (a side dish made with a combination of yogurt and boondi (tiny fried balls of gram flour batter)) and several others. If you are not familiar with Indian cooking, the site may be a bit difficult. For example, the Nargisi Kofta calls for Dhania powder (coriander powder), but nowhere in the glossary that is provided could I find a cross reference for Dhania. The same goes for the Sooji ka Halwa -- if you didn't read the description (i.e., that it contains semolina), when you read the list of ingredients, you see sooji as an ingredient, but there is no reference unless you figure out you need to look up semolina and see the translation to sooji (in Hindi). A part of the netGuruIndia site. This has recipes categorized by East, North, South, and West India in addition to some miscellaneous classifications. You will have to be a bit familiar with Indian cooking and ingredients to manage the recipes on this site. (Last reviewed: 23 Dec 2004)

I don't know a lot about Indian culture, but this is a set of Bengali recipes for Durga Puja. You will have to be a bit familiar with Indian cooking and ingredients to manage the recipes on this site. (Last reviewed: 23 Dec 2004)

Authors, authors, authors ... when your site moves, you need to put up a forwarding page. I've been trying to find where this site moved since June. I finally found it in November. Recipes primarily from the state of Andhra Pradesh. The recipes are based on ones from the author's mother. You will need to find an Indian grocer to get ingredients such as asafetida and gram (you might know it as dal). There is a glossary provided which might help you find some of the ingredients. Indrani's Cooking Page 1.5-check rating
A small site with Bengali recipes. It's on geocities so you have to put up with all those irritating little popup windows with ads, but the recipes have potential. Some the recipe instructions are a bit difficult to follow, but most of the time a second reading helps. Hopefully there will be more added at some point. (Last reviewed: 23 Dec 2004)
