The Recipe Site Review

Chinese recipe websites (a small sampling of what's out on the Web); I just haven't had time to look at them. Updates are forthcoming. Other types of Asian cuisine (Japanese and Thai for example) are on the Asian page.

Chinese Cooking (sh.com) 4.0-check rating  Problem - only Chinese
I cannot find the English version of this site - will wait a while to see if it comes back. This site has reappeared. I have not had time to look it over to see what has changed, so take the rest of this review "with a grain of salt". In this section called Chinese Home-Style Cooking, you will find everything from soups to sweets; there are loads of recipes. The navigation through the recipes is quite smooth and it's easy to get back to your starting point to look at another recipe without jumping through hoops. An unusual feature on this site is that each recipe notes the style (region) of the dish (i.e., Kaifeng, Beijing, Sichuan). All the recipes I looked at had a picture too. (Last reviewed: 15 Jan 2006)
Famous Dishes in Shanghai (shme.com) 4.0-check rating
A commerce site for Shanghai with a collection of over 150 recipes on their "Famous Dishes in Shanghai" page. If you are looking for some VERY unusual recipes, check out Chicken Feet Soaked in Spice Soup, Camel Hoof Paste, Snake Meat Shreds Soup, Streamed and Braised Bear's Paw, or my favorite, Skewered Cicadas. There are also dishes for those of us who are less adventurous. I'm not a timid eater (even ate a chicken foot in Mexico once), but I think I'll draw the line at camel hoof and cicadas. This site rates quite low based on my criteria, but I gave it a high mark because I think it's worth a look for curiosity's sake. (Last reviewed: 23 Dec 2004)
Chopstix.com 2.5-check rating
This one is back online -- I have not had time to review it again. Quite an extensive site. They are trying to sell you cookbooks, but the number of recipes outweighs the slightly commercial message. Many of the recipes have a short paragraph about them and some recipe ingredients have links to explanations. You can also go directly to an ingredients section. Some of the navigation is tiresome; for example, if you click for an ingredient explanation in a recipe you must use the back button to get back to the recipe. This might be a good place for a small popup window. (Last reviewed: 15 Jan 2006)
Yutopian Online 1.5-check rating
A commercial site that was founded to promote oriental board games, but they have about 50 or so recipes (most with pictures). Some of the instructions are a tiny bit vague, but for the most part they are easy enough to follow if you read them through a couple of times. (Last reviewed: 23 Dec 2004)
